Jan 17th Left Tampa at 8:05am. After brief stops in Detroit and Toyko, we arrived in Beijing at 9:10pm on January 18th.
Jan 18th We got to Beijing at 9:40 pm China time (8:40 am on 1/18 US time) after traveling for 28 hours.  We adjusted to the change in time (13 hours ahead of EST), met other families traveling to adopt, and toured Beijing. We stayed at the Jinglun Hotel
Jan 19th Today we walked about 4 blocks to the Beijing Friendship Store, which is a government-run store occupying 4 floors.  We bought pearls, a jade necklace, cloisonne ornaments and a silk wall hanging for our dining room.  Very cool experience!

Then we ate lunch at McDonalds -- we thought we could call out a # to select our value meal <g>.  We were able to point to a picture and upsized our order without realizing what we were doing.

Next, we headed for something called the Silk Alley, passing it several times before realizing it really was an alley.  This was an outdoor market with all sorts of silk and cashmere, as well as other items.  Bargaining was the name of the game at the Silk Alley (the price was the price at the Friendship Store).  We came away with another cloisonne ornament that we didn't need, but the haggling was sure fun <g>.  Rance came away with 4 silk ties -- one is way cool, a red tie with a dragon embroidered in gold.  He plans to wear it to all of Mei Mei's special occasions <g>.  This experience was not just very cool, but way way cool!

Jan 20th Today we visited the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, TianAnMen Square, and watched how pearls are harvested and made into jewlry.

While visiting the Forbidden City, CCTV interviews Rance about his visit to China.

Gotcha
Day!!
We flew to Guangzhou and stayed at the White Swan Hotel for the remainder of our trip. We met Tang Bing Bing (Mei Mei's Chinese name) about 3:45pm China time in the corridor of the White Swan Hotel.  The nannies lined up, holding the babies -6 in all.  We picked her out of the line-up, but had to wait our turn while, one by one, parents held their children for the first time.  Some cried or whimpered, but quieted down quickly.  Not so with Miss Bing Bing.

Her face screwed up and turned red and she howled as fat tears slid from each side of her eyes.  As we boarded the elevator for our room, her nanny waved good-bye with tears in her eyes too.  They were very close. Bing Bing stopped crying after about 15 minutes in our room and enjoyed playing with the stacking cups we brought.  She smiled hesitantly, coyly. She scooted to the floor and showed off her crawling skills, pulling herself up to a standing position in the foyer of our room.

Madame Tang made the rounds to each parent's room answering questions about the baby.  "Bing Bing eats everything, but especially loves rice, and she's the fastest crawler of all the babies." We were glad to have the chance to speak personally with the woman who had supervised her care for so long.

Jan 22nd
The group set off for the Civil Affairs office where we assembled paperwork, paid fees and waited.  Bing Bing slept through it all-she seemed thoroughly confused and exhausted from all the changes.  At 4pm (3AM EST) we went to the Security Office where we were presented with a certificate declaring that Tang Bing Bing was legally adopted by Rance and Patsy Harbor and her new name was Mei Mei Lilly Harbor.

When Mei Mei was awake, she had a stoney stare, taking in all around her and while she submitted to our care, she had not decided to love us yet.

Jan 23rd We were free from official duties and sight-seeing and the day started with promise.  We had a successful and filling breakfast, explored the 1st floor of the hotel and then found the Swan Room-a room outfitted by Mattel for use by adoptive parents during their stay. We played for a  long time and then she became cranky, so we headed back to the room for a nap.
Once there, the floodgates of emotions opened up and she cried and  howled.  All the anger, confusion and grief of leaving the only world she had known poured out. It was quite stormy in room 1229. She would not let Patsy put her down and took 2 naps from 12:45 pm until 7:45 pm.

She and Patsy paced the room, looking in all the mirrors, her head resting on Patsy's chin. They ended up in the bathroom, where there were several mirrors. She'd look at Patsy and herself in the mirror and then look up at Patsy, then back again.  They did this for a while as Mei Mei processed her new predicament.  Her private war had subsided. She began to play and let out belly laughs and her smile was not just a lip-curver, but a full-facer.

Jan 24th
We visited the Six Banyan Tree Temple and the Bonsai Gardens. Mei Mei was still a little tired, but clung tightly throughout the day except when she would take a little nap in her stroller. It was a very enjoyable and peaceful day.
Jan 25th-27th

These days were spent sightseeing, eating, sleeping, playing and lots of bonding between Mei Mei, mom and dad.

Jan 28th Tonight, all the Qingyuan SWI families (pronouced Ching yu en) had a very emotional meeting with the orphanage director, Madame Tang (pr. Tong).  She had brought 3 more babies to Guangzhou for delivery to their new parents and had brought things for us.  She presented each family with an album of 20 photos of our babies throughout their life in the orphanage.  Some photos were group shots and contained babies that we have grown to know and love during our time as a group, but many were individual pictures of our babies.  What a treasure to see her in the surroundings of her first 15 months!

Then Madame Tang had hand-written a note to each child.  Many paragraphs were the same for each child, but she had written a special paragraph for each individual baby.  Our Great Wall facilitator translated the note for each family, and there were no dry eyes (even the men!) in the room.  She explained to each child that she was taken care of in the orphanage for 15 months, then described the child.  The last sentence of Mei Mei's paragraph said that she was the baby that was loved by everyone.

Next, Madame Tang presented each family with a red and gold banner with the name of the orphanage, two hands (one USA and one China) holding a baby, and Chinese characters that said Thank You.

Jan 29th Mei Mei is now walking and is so delighted with herself.  And she eats very well, feeding herself.  She loves carrots!
Jan 30th
Today, we got her medical exam, and tomorrow, our GWCA facilitators will meet with the US Consulate on our behalf (AM) and then in the afternoon we will go to the swearing in.
Feb 1st Left Guangzhou and flew to Hong Kong for an overnight stay at the Regal Airport Hotel
Feb 2nd Departed Hong Kong at 8:40am and flew to Tokyo. From Tokyo we flew to Minneapolis. Once we landed on U.S. soil Mei Mei  was an official U.S. citizen!
