at last. SRL311-11987 undergoes a more thorough inspection after arriving
at it's new garage. The car rode a flatbed back to my house as it wouldn't run at the
time. I recall being worried about getting the car down our very
steep driveway as it had no brakes either. Thankfully the parking brake
had enough left to keep the car from careening through to the back of the
garage. As you can see, $675 buys a whole lot o' Roadster!
The only manual I had at the time was the Chilton
manual covering all the 60's Datsun's. Not much to go by.
After 9 months of tinkering and
learning what makes cars go, the Roadster would actually go under it's own
power. I finished all of the work I needed to do a week or so before my
cousin's wedding. I flew to NJ for the wedding. A week later my
father drove the
Roadster from Birmingham to meet me. You make the call on whether my
father is brave, stupid, or very trusting of his son's mechanical
abilities. From there we drove it together all through
upstate NY looking at colleges (I wound up choosing St. Lawrence in Canton NY)
and then back to Alabama. Prior to that drive, the longest the car had
gone was a 24 mile "highway test". Nearly 2000 miles for a
maiden voyage and not a single problem! I guess Dad is trusting.
