Below is a list of parts purchased for the engine rebuild detailed on the Engine Work page. The list isn't complete yet as I still have a few things left to purchase, notably bearings and valve springs. Still this will give you an idea what is required in terms of parts and dollars to rebuild the U20. The prices listed are what I actually paid for each part. Unless noted, these parts are all Nissan parts. Note that I spent the better part of a year gathering these parts which allowed me to do a bit of bargain hunting. You may not be able to duplicate some of these prices as things never seem to go down in price. I've detailed the machine work after this list. As I've done all of the assembly myself, I don't know what a machine shop would charge for that service. You will lower your costs by purchasing your own parts and going straight to the machine shop rather than working through a garage. Just as an FYI, the total cost of replacing my timing gears, chains, lower tensioner, and lower guide came to $479 not including a gasket set.
The machine work included cleaning ($54) and magnafluxing ($26) the block, installing new jackshaft bearings ($36) and freeze plugs ($24), boring and fitting +.020 pistons ($85). The con rods were reconditioned ($80) which included checking for cracks and straightness, installing the ARP bolts and re-sizing the big ends, fitting the small end bushings and honing for piston pin fit. The rods were also shot-peened ($26). Finally, the crankshaft was magnafluxed ($24) and ground .010 undersize on both the main and rod journals ($75). I also had the jackshaft magnafluxed ($18) and balanced the rods and rotating assembly ($200). In addition, I did shim the cam towers which turned out to be much easier than I expected. |
