I am currently very interested in Klingons and programming. I was surfing one day, and I came across this site, which explained the exact length of a Klingon year.
Interesting.
I also heard about SuStel, a guy on the KLI's messageboard that signs all of his letters and other communication with a "Stardate" of his own invention.
Very Interesting.
So, after studying his method, I realized that a similar system could be contrived using the length of a Klingon year.
I calculate it by taking the number of earth seconds that have happened since Midnight on 1/1/870 (I decided this was the beginning of the Klingon calendar, since all the sources I could find simply gave the date as "869-870 CE".) I divide that number by the number of seconds in a Klingon Year (.666*365.26 days), and multiply that by 1000, which gives me 1000 units per year. Truncate to one decimal place, subtract 1,000,000 (millenial rollover. It keeps the HovpoH to six digits) and you have the HovpoH.
Pretty simple.
(Note: Since writing this the first time, I have found that the HovpoH actually starts on
12/14/869 at 23:58:15 GMT.
I did not change it, as I felt it gave the system more of an arbitrary feel.)
You will find that 1/10 of a stardate is equal to approximately 35 earth minutes, so this can be used for limited local timekeeping. HovpoH is based on GMT (Easier to program).
So there you have it. My Klingon Stardate.
If you would like to convert the calendar date (your birthday, wedding day, etc.) to a HovpoH, or vice versa, I have written two JavaScripts that do just that:
