General Job Sites | IT/Technical Jobs | Communications Jobs

General Job Sites - These sites cater to job seekers in all career fields, and they all feature free job-search and resume-posting services. (Some offer "premium" or "distribution" services for a fee, but we haven't personally used anything more than the basic free services.)
Monster - The granddaddy of job search sites, Monster offers a user-friendly job search engine. It also features an easy-to-use resume builder, which registered employers can browse and which you can use to apply for Monster job listings online. Monster now offers a new and improved job search agent...it emails you the job title, posting date, company name, and location for each position that matches your search criteria, along with a direct link to the job posting.
America's Job Bank -  This web site offers a particularly good search agent. When jobs are found matching your search criteria, the agent sends an email with the job ID number, position title, company name, and location for each job listing, as well as a direct link to the complete job description.
FlipDog - This site has a lot of good job listings and a very user-friendly search engine. FlipDog allows you to set up multiple search agents (called "JobHunters") and post a plain-text resume and cover letter. The site also has a useful Resource Center that enables you to research companies, salaries, interviewing tips, and more.
CareerBuilder - A good site with multiple search options: quick search, advanced search, and search by company. You can also post your resume on the site. CareerBuilder has one of the better job search agents; when it finds jobs matching your criteria, it sends an email that provides the position title, full-time/part-time status, company name, location, and the first line of each job description, as well as a direct link to the full description/details.
JobWarehouse - This site may not look as slick as some of the others, but it generally has good job leads and offers an easy-to-use job search engine and resume-posting capabilities. The site's "Midnight Match" search agent is definitely one of the better ones; whenever jobs are found matching your criteria, it emails you the job title, company name, location, contact name, salary (when listed), first couple lines of the job description, and a direct link to the full job listing.
Yahoo! HotJobs - Yahoo! Careers acquired HotJobs some time ago, hence the new name. The site boasts solid job listings and an excellent resume-hosting service...you can post multiple resumes using a simple step-by-step resume building tool. Once you've created your online resume, you can customize the format/display by choosing from 10 different resume designs. HotJobs issues each resume a (free) unique URL; for example, Shay's is http://resumes.hotjobs.com/shay_tressa/seniorwritereditor. You can then forward your resume link directly to  employers and recruiters (instead of sending your resume as an attachment).
Vault - This web site bills itself as "the insider career network"; in addition to job postings, Vault offers a wide variety of useful content. Their Weekly Career Update newsletter is especially good; unlike some "newsletters" that are primarily ads, this one offers a lot of good tips and useful information. As with other sites, you can search for jobs and post a resume. But this site is also crammed with lots of other useful information...check out the industries, companies, and career topics sections.
Quintessential Careers - While this web site doesn't host resumes or offer a job-search database, it does provide a lot of useful resources for job-seekers. Click on the Industry Specific Jobs link then choose your industry...you'll find a wealth of job sites targeted to professionals within those industries. The site also offers career articles and tutorials on such topics as resume and cover letter writing, interviewing skills, salary negotiation, and more.

IT/Technical Jobs - If you're an engineer or IT professional, or if you're seeking a job within the high-tech industry, there are a variety of sites that specifically target the tech set. We've listed some of the better ones here:
Dice.com - This web site bills itself as the leading IT job board, and it certainly is one of the most popular with engineers and other techies. In addition to a good job search engine, this site also hosts resumes and allows you to format them using HTML tags for a more polished, professional look.
techies.com - This site allows users to search for jobs using the quick search option or advanced search. Registered users can also post a resume, set up job search agents, apply for tech jobs online, monitor companies, and more.
EngineerJobs - As the name indicates, this site focuses exclusively on engineering jobs. From the home page, you can select a state or job title to view all relevant listings within that category. You can also search by company name. The site allows registered users to post a resume.
ITClassifieds - This site allows users to search for jobs by state and/or keywords. Registered users can also post a resume on the site.
SwiftJobs - This site allows users to search for IT jobs via quick search (see the "Search Jobs" section in the left-hand column) or advanced search. Users can also post a resume on this site. (Several upgrades are available for a fee, but the basic resume posting service is free.)
JustTechJobs - This site allows users to search for jobs by technical skill and by state.

Communications Jobs - If you are an advertising, marketing, media, public relations, or publishing professional, here are several good web sites that cater to the communications industry:
MediaBistro - This site states its purpose as "connecting all media professionals to new opportunities...and each other". While the site does have a lot of good job listings, the majority of them tend to be in New York City. (A recent search turned up 298 positions...167 of which were in New York!) Still, the site has a lot to offer communications professionals across the country. For starters, MediaBistro allows you to post multiple resumes using their rather slick-looking template. They also assign each resume a unique URL (see Shay's as an example: http://www.mediabistro.com/resumes/ShayTressaDeSimone12), which enables you to forward your resume link directly to employers and recruiters instead of sending your resume as an attachment. The site also hosts information on media courses/seminars and events, bulletin boards/forums, fun and useful content, and more.
The Creative Group - This company once functioned as a headhunter, and actually placed Shay at two of her jobs (Hills and Allied Domecq). But they recently phased out the recruiter aspect of the business and now focus exclusively on freelance/project work. If you're seeking advertising/creative work and you don't mind working on a contract basis, check out their web site for more info: company overview, immediate job openings, benefits, testimonials, and more.
Adweek Career Network - If you have access to Adweek magazine, it's best to check the actual help wanted section for job listings. If not, the Adweek web site offers two types of job listings: complete listings updated daily for subscribers (their "special offer" is $39.95 for a three-month subscription) or free access to jobs posted seven or more days ago for non-subscribers. Either way, you can post your resume online for free.
Other Communications Job Sites - There are a number of other communications job sites that are specialized by industry; here are a few that you may want to check out:
Advertising - AdvertisingAge Career Center
Broadcast/TV - PlanetMedia, TVJobs, TVSpy Job Bank on Vault.com, TVNews Jobs
Journalism - JournalismJobs, JobLink, JAWS (Journalism and Women Symposium) Job Bank, Investigative Reporters and Editors Jobs, ASNE (American Society of Newspaper Editors) Job Links, StaffWriters
Marketing - MarketingJobs
Public Relations - PRWeek Jobs, Work in PR
Publishing - Editor and Publisher, Publishers Weekly Job Board on Vault.com
Writers/Editors/Copywriters - Sunoasis Jobs, The Write Jobs, StaffWriters
