Close
to my Heart Poem
The easiest way to learn how to write this poem is to read an example. Note that the first and last lines are the same. The other three lines can be modified to suit the poet.
My teddy bear is close to my
heart.
He is old and worn but
dependable.
He keeps me warm on a cold,
windy night.
He comforts me when I’m sad.
My teddy bear is close to my
heart.

One Line Sequence Poem
This free verse poem uses the beginning words for each line below. Students complete each phrase, then when finished they may check it over to see how it flows. Experimentation is encouraged!
I wish. . .
Once . . .
Remember. . .
Yes. . .
No…
And. . .
It seems . . .
I have a dream . . .
Oh . .
.
Example:
I
wish that I had a new bicycle.
Once
my brother let me ride his for a day.
Remember,
it’s always wise to be nice to your brother.
Yes,
we are good friends as well as family.
No,
I don’t think even that will make him give me HIS bicycle.
It
seems that he doesn’t like me THAT much.
I
have a dream that Santa will bring me a bike of my own.
Oh,
and by the way, do you think he might bring me a scooter too?

My Heart Soars
This is another format with a great deal of freedom of expression. The poem’s flow is easy to capture using the following example:
The
sight of my brother coming home from college,
Seeing
the audience while I perform on stage,
Going
on vacations with my family,
All
speak to me.
The
fun I have when my grandparents visit,
Getting
into bed after a long day,
Being
at school with the best teacher,
All
speak to me.
Going
horseback riding in the hot summer sun,
Fooling
around with all my great friends,
Playing
a fun game of tennis,
All
speak to me.
Modeling
and meeting new people,
Baking
brownies with my mom,
Running
outside with my dog,
All
speak to me.
And
my heart soars! (By Karie)
