William Griffin Stokes was born in NC; lived in Mississippi until he moved to TX in 1869 after the Civil War. He was a confederate soldier from the summer of 1861 until August 16, 1864 when he was wounded. He was seriously wounded in the shoulder while with Co.1, 24th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. --source Linda Cooper.

At the time of his death, his physician was W. W. Cooper, who may be the father of Arthur Dalton Cooper. This has not been proven yet. --source Linda Cooper.
