"Aaron
Engle, who married Albina Haines, was the son of Obadiah Engle and
Patience Cole , the daughter of Job Cole and Elizabeth Tomlin.
Job was the son of Kendall Cole and Ann Budd.
Kendall was the son of Samuel Cole and Mary Kendall, the
daughter of Thomas Kendall, the progenitor of the Kendall family,
and Mary Collins, the daughter of Francis Collins, the progenitor
of the Collins family, and Mary (Budd) Goslin, his second wife,
the daughter of Thomas Budd, and widow of Dr. John Goslin, of
Burlington, New Jersey. Samuel
Cole was the son of Samuel Cole and Elizabeth, the progenitors of the
Cole family. Obadiah Engle
was the son of Joseph Engle and Mary Borton, the daughter of Obadiah
Borton and Susannah Butcher, the daughter of Samuel Butcher and

"Genealogy of the Stokes Family," 1903, Pg. 302 states this about Old
Stokingham in Willingborough Township:
"Stokingham is in
Willingborough Township, Burlington country, New Jersey.
The site is an i deal one, situated fronting on the northerly side, forty
feet above, overlooking the beautiful Rancocas River.
The original house was erected by Thomas Harding, the first located under
the proprietors of the tract of land comprising two hundred acres.
In this house the first Friends' meeting at Rancocas were held until a
regular Meeting House was built. In
the record of the monthly meeting of Friends, held in Burlington, in 1681, the
following minute is t o be found: "It
is agreed that the meeting at Rancocas be held at the house of Thomas Harding
." John Stokes, the
third son of the first American ancestors, Thomas and Mary (Bernard) Stokes,
when taking unto himself Elizabeth Green to be his wife, purchased
the said tract of land from Thomas Harding.
There his children were born. His
son John, who married Hannah Stogdelle, in 1740, succeeded his
father in the title. David's
first child, Israel Stokes, who married Sarah Borton, succeeded
his father in the title. Israel's
fifth child, Israel Stokes , who married Caroline Green, succeeded
his father in the title. And Israel's
first child, Annie Stokes, who married Tylee B. Engle, succeeded
her father in the title, who owns and resides at the present time with her
worthy husband and interesting family at "Old Stokingham" .

"Genealogy of the Stokes Family," 1903, pg. 275b, states this about James
Middleton Stokes:
"James Middleton Stokes, eldest
child of Samuel Stokes and Amy (Middleton) Stokes, was born in
Burlington, New Jersey, August 18th, 1815.
He learned the blacksmith trade from his
father while living in Jacksonborough, Ohio, an d followed that occupation for
twenty-two years. He married Maria
T. Cox, March 2, 1842, and lived in the above village, where their children
were born, until 1855, when he removed t o the farm where he still resides.
Mr. Stokes has fulfilled the duties of Township clerk for
thirty-one years, as well as that of other offices.
He was real estate appraiser for his township in 1890, being at the time
seventy-five years of age. He is still active and fond o f relating his many
reminiscences of by-gone times.
To this couple was born three sons. The eldest, William Cox, was born February 23, 1843 .
He volunteered August 31, 1861, in Company C., 35th O. V. I., and became
third sergeant i n his company. He
took part in the battles of Perryville and Chickamauga, as well as other
engagements. He was killed at the storming of Missionary Ridge, November
25th, 1863. Samuel Gilbert,
the second son, was born May 30th, 1847, and has always lived upon the home farm
. He married Caroline A. Withrow,
October 14th, 1868, and to them were born two children; Jesse Maria, born
March 19th, 1870, married John C. Yager, D. D. of S. Pavola, Kansas, who
departed this life Sept. 26th, 1901.
The second child, Arthur Edward, was
born November 22nd, 1878, married Lillian Kenworthy .
At the present time living with his parents.
The third son of James Middleton Stokes
and Maria (Cox) Stokes, was James Monroe, born September 30th, 1851,
married Elizabeth A. James, February 3rd, 1877.
To them were born three children, William
Ernest, March 11th, 1878, A. B. Miami University, 1899.
Irene Leta, born May 20th, 1892, and Paul James, born
October 15th, 1894.
James Middleton Stokes and Maria T.
(Cox) Stokes, celebrated their "golden wedding" March 2nd, 1892. The neighbors making this a day for an annual gathering for
ten years, up to the sixtieth anniversary, when this loving tie was broken when Maria
T. Stokes passed onward, May 20th, 1902. J. M. S.
