"Joseph, Father of Henry C. Deacon, resided in Westhampton Township, was a representative farmer, and owned several hundred acres of land, which was divided among his children.  His first wife, Lydia Ridgway, died without issue.  His second wife, Mary, daughter of Henry Chambers and Elizabeth Fox, bore him one child, Henry C. Deacon.  His third wife, Beulah, daughter of Robert Haines, bore him children - Mary, deceased, was the wife of David Cole; William ; Joseph, deceased; Robert, deceased; Joshua; Japhet, deceased; Benjamin; Sally Ann, deceased ; and Jeremiah.  The father of these children died in his eighty-fourth year, about 1858.

Henry C. Deacon spent his boyhood on the farm and attending the district school.  He acquired a good knowledge of mathematics and surveying, and practiced the latter for many year s in the vicinity of his home.

He married, March 1, 1832, Elizabeth, daughter of Israel Stokes and Sarah Borton, of Rancocas, N.J.  She was born March 17, 1814, was a member of the Society of Friends, and a devoted wife and mother.  Their children are, Henry I., born January 1, 1833, a farmer on the home stead of his father; Sarah Stokes, and Israel Stokes (Twins), born September 13, 1836, the former the wife of Israel Fenimore, of Lumberton, and Maryetta, wife of Edward L. Bowne, of Southampton.

After his marriage, Mr. Deacon resided in Rancocas for two years.  But, in 1834, he purchased and settled on one hundred and eighty acres of land, on the road from Burlington to Mount Holly, where the railroad crosses, to which he has since added one hundred and sixty acres each for two of his children, and erected substantial brick dwelling-houses thereon.  He built his present brick residence in 1854.

Mr. Deacon has taken an active part in the public matters of his township and county, and has served as freeholder, committeeman, and surveyor of highways.  He is one of the council of proprietors of the Western Division of the State of New Jersey, and was a director of the Burlington Bank from its organization to its close.  The Deacon's may safely be classed among the thrifty, industrious, and judicious agriculturists of Burlington County. Notes for HANNAH STOKES:

NOTE: (D.A.D.- 2/01/02) "Genealogy of the Stokes Family," 1903, Pg. 212a, states this about Charles Williams, husband of Hannah Stokes:

"Hannah Stokes, the second child of Charles and Tacy Jarrett Stokes, married Charles Williams by Friends' ceremony, on the 27th day of the 4th month, A. D. 1837, and left New Jersey to reside as a happy bride in one of the first homes of prominence in Montgomery County, in the State of Pennsylvania, beautifully situated among the picturesque hills of White Marsh Township, bordering on the Wissahickon Creek, and fronting on the Turnpike leading from Chestnut Hill to Norristown.

Charles Williams was a man of strong individuality; there was a physical force and magnetism about him in appearance, voice, and manner which few men possess.  In stature, he was erect and of magnificent proportions.  In personal bearing, he was superb.  In character, he was sterling.  In disposition, he had the courage of a lion, and the kindness and amiability of a woman.  He loved the truth, and always sought after it; and when contending for it, there was no arm more strong than his.  He was widely known as a man of influence and property .  He was a farmer by occupation, choice, and enjoyment.  His White Marsh farm, of nearly three hundred highly improved acres, was an ideal one, and no home in Montgomery County was more distinguished for hospitality than his.  He was a man of great mental and physical energy.  He was very positive, without faith in compromises.  He took interest in all matters of public character, and was strong and conscientious in his convictions.  In politics, he was a n anti-slavery man and a prominent Lincoln Republican.  He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends, and was obedient to its precepts and principles.  He was kind and good to those who were worthy, and was all the time doing noble deeds which his wealth would admit, know n only to himself and the beneficiary.  He was very unassuming, and deplored notoriety and se lf-praise; yet appreciative of merit and noble character, and such, always found in him a friend and support.

His relationship with the Stokes family, in marrying Hannah, brought with it additional honor, social distinction, and family pride.

Hannah, who survives him, was to him all that the wife comprehends, she was attractive, an ideal mother, a helpmate, and great woman.

He loved and adored her; and their characters, their happy union, and career together through a long wedlock will always stand out as a beacon-light to guide and instruct their large family of interesting children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren to the remotest gene rations."
