5/23/97) The LDS Family Search Ancestral File shows a problem with John
Hudson. They have him listed as
being born about 1667, in London, Middlesex, England.
With a son also named John Hudson, born after 1673, in Burlington
County, New Jersey. If this were
the case, John Hudson, the father, would have been just over 8 years old
when he had his son John. I
will attempt to correct this during my search.

an inventory of his estate was made, upon which is the following endorsement:
'Came to his end by an unnatural death, in ye lower end of Gloucester
county."(See note below, end of 1st paragraph, D.A.D. - 3/31/97)
Birthplace is:
Stockingham-Northamton Twsp. (I don't know who typed this, but It could
not be true since they did not arrive on this continent until 1677.
Stockingham is what they called their residence in the Northampton, N.J.
area).
NOTE: (D.A.D.-
3/31/97) "Genealogical and Memorial History of the State of New
Jersey", 1910, Vol 2 pg. 580 states this about John Stokes and
Family:
"John, the third child and
eldest son of Thomas and Mary (Bernard) Stokes, (John is really
the 4th child, 2nd son, this book leaves out Henry, born in 1673 in
England) was born, probably in London, in 1675, and was brought to the new world
by his father when he was about two years old. In
1719, his father made him the sole executor of his will. ***In his "First
Emigrant Settlers of Newton Township", Judge Clement says, "Nothing
his known of John Stokes save what may be gathered from the records in
the office of the secretary of state at Trenton. "
In 1716, an inventory of his estate was made, upon which is the following
endorsement; "Came to his end by an unnatural death, in ye lower end of
Gloucester county." However,
this inventory and endorsement must refer to some other John Stokes, as
it is hardly possible that Thomas Stokes would make a man his sole
executor three years after his death. It
may possibly mean that John, the Brother of Thomas Stokes, came
also to this country and died in 1716.
In 1712, John Stokes
married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Green, she was
known as "Lady Green", and was the granddaughter of Arthur Green,
of Bug Brook parish, Northampton county, England.
She came to America, it is said, in the household of Dr. Daniel Wills,
in whose care she had been placed by her father.
Being displeased by her marriage to John Stokes, her father
disinherited her, and sent her brother, John Green, to the colony to look
after his interests and investments in New Jersey.
The Children of John and Elizabeth
(Green) Stokes were: (1) John, eldest child and only son, born in
Gloucester County, New Jersey, July 16, 1713, died August 24, 1798.
He married, in 1740, Hannah, daughter of Jervis and Mary
(Sharp) Stogdelle, of Evesham township, Burlington County, N.J. (2) Mary,
Married in 1734, Edward Mullen, and had a grand daughter, Keziah Burr,
who married Richard Howell, afterwards Governor of New Jersery, whose
grand daughter married Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederate
States of America. (3) Elizabeth, married Richard Blackman.
(4) Sarah, married Isaac Rogers.
NOTE (D.A.D.-5/18/97) John
Stokes is buried in the "Rancocas Quaker Burying Grounds - 1703 "
It is in Willingboro N.J. on Centerton Street, which is an extension of Bridge
Street, o f Rancocas Village, N.J. It
is on the Left, just before the Centerton Bridge. His grave marker reads, "John Stokes, son of Thomas
Stokes, born in England 1675, died 1749." The grave is towards the back in the middle area of the
Burial Grounds. He is buried with
his Father, M other, Wife, and others.
NOTE: (D.A.D.-
5/22/97) "Moorestown and Her Neighbors - Historical Sketches," George
DeCou, 1929, PG 143; states this about John Stokes:
"John married Elizabeth
Green, known in family tradition as "Lady Green" in 1712.... John
and Elizabeth Green Stokes settled on a plantation located further down the
creek which they named, "Stokingham."
LDS Ancestral Files
show a Baptismal date of 11 Oct 1952, Endowment date of 3 Feb 1953, and Sealed
to Spouse on 20 Jan 1954 Salt Lake Temple.
This is different than the dates listed by whoever listed them in this
PAF.
NOTE: (D.A.D.-
01/09/98) "History of Burlington County, N.J." pg. 510, states this
about the John Stokes family:
(Concerning the beginnings and history of
Willingborough Twsp) The Location,
the longest in the name of the family, is that of John Harding, which at
his death, by deed, executed by John Wills, his executor, was conveyed to
John Stokes, who came from London, England, when a small boy, with his
father, Thomas Stokes. John
Stokes married Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas Green, and
had three children: Mary, John, and Elizabeth.
John, the second, married Mary, the daughter of Jervis
Stockdale, a preacher in the Society of Friends, and who cam e to this
country in company with William Penn and others.
John, the third, married Susanna
Newton, and settled on a farm in Haycock Township, in Bucks County, PA.
Jervis married Elizabeth Rogers, David married Ann
Lancaster, Mary married Isaac Newton, Hannah married Jacob
Haines, Rachel married Joseph Hackney, and Elizabeth
married Roger French, from which marriages most of the Stokes families in
America Descend.
One hundred and fifty acres of the two
hundred and fifty acres of land, located by Thomas Harding, and conveyed
as aforesaid to John Stokes, has been handed down from father to son,
with additional purchases, which comprise most of the locations of William
Evans and Robert Hudson to William Stokes, General George
H. Stokes,, Hillyard, Charles, and Rowland Stokes , descendants and
present owners.
In the record of the Monthly Meeting of Friends, held in Burlington, in 1681, the following minute is to be found: "It is agreed that the meeting at Ancocas be held at the house o f Thomas Harding."
The old mansion-house on the Harding Farm
was high and beautifully situated on the bank s of the Rancocas; for several
generations in was the homestead of the Stokes family.
The original house was destroyed by fire in about 1800, and was replaced
by a frame structure, a pa rt of which is now standing, but the present brick
building, which is on the site of the original, was built by David Stokes,
and rebuilt by his grandson, Israel Stokes. From its pleasant situation and attractive surroundings, it
has been a popular summer resort, and bears the name of "Stokingham."
NOTE: (D.A.D.-
4/22/98) "Genealogy of the Stokes Family," 1903, pg. 51, stats this
about Martha and Elizabeth Stokes:
"Martha and Elizabeth Stokes,
who married Aaron and Abel Haines, were the daughters of Jarvis Stokes
and Elizabeth Rogers, the daughter of William Rogers. Jarvis was the son of John Stokes and Hannah
Stogdelle, the daughter of Jarvis Stogdelle and Mary.
John was the son of John Stokes and Elizabeth Green,
the daughter of Thomas Green and Elizabeth, of Bugbrook, a parish of
Northamptonshire, England. John was the son of Thomas Stokes and Mary Bernard
, the progenitors of the Stokes family, (See page 8)."
NOTE: (D.A.D.- 07/01/2002) "Genealogy of the Stokes Family," 1903, Pg. 302 states this about Old Stokingham in Willingborough Township:
"Stokingham is in
Willingborough Township, Burlington country, New Jersey.
The site is an ideal one, situated fronting on the northerly side, forty
feet above, overlooking the beautiful Rancocas River.
The original house was erected by Thomas Harding, the first
located under the proprietors of the tract of land comprising two hundred acres.
In this house the first Friends' meeting at Rancocas were held until a
regular Meeting House was built. In
the record of the monthly meeting of Friends, held in Burlington, in 1681, the
following minute is t o be found: "It
is agreed that the meeting at Ancocas be held at the house of Thomas Harding."
John Stokes, the third son of the first American ancestors, Thomas
and Mary (Bernard) Stokes, when taking unto himself Elizabeth Green
to be his wife, purchased the said tract of land from Thomas Harding.
There his children were born. His
son John, who married Hannah Stogdelle, in 1740, succeeded his
father in the title. David's
first child, Israel Stokes, who married Sarah Borton, succeeded
his father in the title. Israel's
fifth child, Israel Stokes, who married Caroline Green,
succeeded his father in the title. And
Israel's first child, Annie Stokes, who married Tylee B. Engle,
succeeded her father in the title, who owns and resides at the present time with
her worthy husband and interesting family at "Old Stokingham" . C. S.

07/01/2002) "Genealogy of the Stokes Family," 1903, Pg. 303 is a copy
of a letter written from Elizabeth Coles to her son, John Green:
Loving son, John Green:

all these for yourself; and I have
sent your sister Stokes one shift for herself, one hallon pillow drawer
one pare of worsted stockings for herself and one slip of blue worsted to knitt
your little boy a pare of stockings, and one slip o f blue worsted to do what

I have sent your sister three books as you sent for; but I was forced to send to

remain your ever loving mother, Elizabeth Coles, and that little note you
sent me of tokens so kindly that I shall exptitt as long as I live - Pray son
let me hear from you as often as you can.
L. F.
The above letter of Elizabeth
Coles to her son, John Green, is proof positive beyond cavil, who the
mother of Elizabeth Green was. That
her parents were not Edward Green and Annie, as some of the family
contends, is shown in the Secretary's office at Trenton.
Her father there is recorded as Thomas Green; and the letter
proves the claim of the descendants of John that they were related to Elizabeth
Green, who married John Stokes.

NOTE (D.A.D.- 5/14/97) LDS
Church Family Ancestral file lists Thomas Stokes Jr. as being born in
Centerton, Burlington Co. NJ. - A correction needs to be made somewhere, after
Birth Certificate is found and verified.
NOTE: In 1709 Thomas
pioneered 300 acres in Wateford Twsp (Now Delaware) New Jersey by Cooper's
Creek;" This settlement was in the midst of an Indian neighborhood---on a
map left--showing a large survey, written by the water course last named,
"the stream the Indian King liveth on".
NOTE: (D.A.D.- 4/7/97)
"Genealogical and Memorial History of the State of New Jersey," 1910,
Vol 2, pg 581, states this about Thomas Stokes Jr.:
"Thomas Stokes Jr., youngest child of Thomas
and Mary (Bernard) Stokes, was born in 1682, died November 7, 1736.
In 1709 he purchased from John Kay, of Springwell, three hundred
acre s of land in Waterford, now Delaware Township, Camden County, New Jersey,
bounded on the south side by the north branch of Cooper's creek, extending on
both sides of a tributary of the same, and including what is now some of the
best soil in the neighborhood. On
this tract he settled, his house standing near what was about thirty years ago
the home of Mark Ballinger. This
settlement was in the midst of an Indian neighborhood, and it was not until
after the middle of the nineteenth century that the last of the aboriginal
dwellers passed away, and the remains of their burying ground may still be seen
near Tindall's run, east of the Haddonfield and Berlin road. In 1704, Thomas
Stokes married (first) Deliverance, daughter of Isaac and Lydia
Horner, of Northampton Township, Burlington County, whose sister, Hannah,
was the first wife of John Matlack, son of William Matlack, the
emigrant. Deliverance died between 1713 and 1715, and bore her husband
six children: (1) Hannah, born July 1705, died in childhood.
(2) Joseph, July 12, 1706. (3) Benjamin, January 27, 1708,
who went to North Carolina, and has sometimes been confused with his father.
(4) Lydia, July 13, 1710, married (first) 1734, Samuel Haines,
and (Second) Jacob Lamb. (5)
Thomas, November 5, 1711, married, 1741, Abigail, daughter of John
Matlack (son of William Matlack the emigrant), by his second wife Mary
Lee. (6) Deliverance,
September 18, 1713, married Darling Conrow.
On September 1, 1715, Thomas Stokes
married (second) Rachel, daughter of Job and Rachel Wright, of
Oyster Bay or Westbury, Long Island, who died February 18, 1742, having born her
husband eight children: (7) Joshua, born in Waterford Township, Camden
County, New Jersey, April 6, 1716, died there in 1779. Married, December 10,
1741, to Amy, daughter of John and Sarah Hinchman. (8) Rachel,
October 15, 1717, married, September 7, 1734, John Cowperthwait. 9) Job,
October 15, 1717, Twin with Rachel.
(10) Hannah, June 26, 1719, married Benjamin Pine.
(11) Jacob, March 21, 1721, married 1749, Priscilla Ellis.
(12) Keziah, January 25, 17 24, married 1750, Joseph Browning.
(13) John, November 1, 1724, married 1751, Ann Champion, a
widow, possibly of Peter Champion, and the daughter of William and
Sarah (Collins) Ellis. (14) Rosanna,
May 2, 1728, married, May 19, 1748, Samuel, son of Samuel and Abigail
(Ward) Collins."

07/03/2002) Stokes Website - Developed by James Stokes states this: http://home.supernet.com/~jlstokes/thomas.htm
The Stokes Genealogy states
that Benjamin Stokes, son of Thomas and Rachel Stokes moved to
North Carolina. If we look at the will of Benjamin Stokes, of Burlington
County we see he mentions sisters, Lydia Haines and Deliverance Conro.
The will of Rachel Stokes, wife of Thomas, shows she had daughters
Lydia Haines and Deliverance Conrow. Clearly the Benjamin
of Burlington County is the son of Thomas and Rachel Stokes and he died
in Burlington County and didn't move to North Carolina as stated in the
Genealogy of the Stokes Family. I can't find evidence that any of our Stokes'
moved to North and South Carolina during the colonial period.

made after a Birth Certificate can verify correct data. Also, the LDS Church

that are shown to be the children of Thomas Stokes's Second Wife, Rachel
Wright, in the book "Genealogical and Memorial History of the State of
New Jersey," 1910, Vol 2, pg 582.

NOTE: (D.A.D.-
5/28/97) Birth Date & Birth Place as shown in the LDS Family Search
Ancestral File is 25 Jan 1685 in Centerton, Burlington, N.J.
The Birth date should be 25 Mar 1685 since the Old System Calendar began
in March instead of in January until 1752, thus, 1 Mo, 25th, 1685 is actually,
March 25, 1685. As far as the place
of birth, I will attempt to prove it through other means during my search.
