Haines, M.D.:
GEORGE HAINES, M. D.
"George Haines, M.D., son of Nehemiah
Haines and Abigail Haines, was born 6-13, 1798, two miles north of Medford,
N.J. on the old homestead located in 1863 by John Haines, the eldest son
of Richard and Margaret, the progenitors of the family, in the house
built by John's son, Jonathan, which is still occupied by the
Haines family, and in good repair. He
remained with his parents until the death of his father, and later went to
Camden, N.J., in the store o f his uncle, Noah, and brother, Charles
Haines. At the age of eighteen
he entered the office of Dr. Parish, of Philadelphia, and began the study
of Medicine, and graduated in 1821 fro m the University of Pennsylvania. After
two years spent in the hospitals of Philadelphia, and attending Dr. Parish's
private practice, he removed to Medford, N.J. and began the practice of his
profession. He married, 2-17, 1825
to Sarah Wills, and erected a dwelling in Medford, where he continued to
reside until 1845, when his business was so extensive as to affect h is health.
He sold his dwelling and a great part of his business to Dr. A. E.
Budd, bought a farm one mile from Medford, where he moved and continued to
reside until 1856, when he re moved to Medford, and still continued to visit
some families who would not dispense with hi s medical services.
He was a member of the New Jersey Medical
Society, and kept abreast of his profession.
He was frequently called in consultation, as his experience and judgment
had won distinct ion for him as a physician.
He was one of the organizers of Medford Bank, elected director, and one
of the inspectors until his resignation. He
was treasurer of the Burlington Count y Insurance Company until his resignation,
and did a great deal of public business, such as settling estates, etc.
He was a man of broad, liberal views, and his word was his bond.
He had fine poetic taste, was a fluent speaker, and delivered many
discourses in the cause of temperance. He
was a member of the Society of Friends. In
politics he was a Republican, but would not accept of office, although
frequently solicited.
He was a firm supporter of Lincoln in the
dark and bloody days of the Rebellion, and contributed liberally in raising
means toward enlisting men in the army. He
was of a vigorous constitution, and rarely unwell; his last sickness was not two
hours, which terminated in death, 4-12, 1877, nearly seventy-nine years of
age."
