amateur astronomy
and
astrophotography

Drawing of Neptune from observation dated 6/11/03 - between 8:15 and 8:30 UT - 4:15 to 4:30am local time. The image was recorded with pencil on paper and then transferred to digital media using Corel Photo Paint. Click here to see original pencil sketch. Observing notes are below

Observed the planet for the first time at 280x using a Tele Vue 10mm Radian on a Nexstar 11 GPS. The seeing was below average - 4 out of 10 - with very high frequency undulations. Transparency was below average - 3 out of 6. It was very hot, humid and buggy. The detail was observed over a period of 40 minutes. Neptune at this magnification is at the size threshold between a star and an extended object. A little smaller and it would be star like.
