Design Notes
The RRLS Tristam Subsidized Liner is a modified 600 ton Lord Summerset class subsidized liner (Adventure Class Ships Volume 2 Book 1 copyright FASA '81). Built at Rylanor Rylanor/Spinward Marches. She is 28 years old. Originally built for the Retief/Reading families fully owned partnership known as R&R Lines with home offices on Porozlo. The employees of the line are almost all members of the owner's families. Four years ago Chester LeTres bought in as a full partner in the R&R Line allowing the purchase of a second liner, the RRLS Isolde (sister ship to the Tristam). The R&R Line ranges from the Zhodani border and the Sword Worlds to the Domain of Deneb, but operates primarily in the Rylanor Subsector.
The Tristam and Isolde are unusual because they are set up for family life. On the Tristam the skipper (Capt. Dan Retief Jr., Imperial Navy ret.) and his wife share a large stateroom and use a small stateroom as an office. There are two other adult couples (Ed Reading 3rd and his wife and Sven LeTres) in the crew which have combined a pair of adjacent small staterooms into a large stateroom. The three other crew slots are filled by adult children of the Retief's and the LeTres'. There are four bunks used by the minor children of the Readings. On the Isolde the arrangements are similar with the skipper, Clitheroe LeTres Ugboajah and her husband having two of their adult children in the crew. The other couples in the crew are Laura Reading Arneson, her husband and three minor children, Fred LeTres, his wife and one adult and one minor child.
The recreation room is dedicated to the children for play and study. The gunners and ship's boat pilot assist with childcare and teaching when the ship is not in danger.
They carry heavier laser turrets than are normally found on civilian ships and a VRF point defense laser battery (2 guns) due to Capt. Reading's naval contacts. There are eight 16 ton holds designed to take standard cargo containers and two smaller holds, one of 5 tons used for hauling mail and the other of 7 tons used for the personal property of the ship's passengers.
The Tristam is two years away from being paid off. The Isolde is 26 years from being paid off.
