Design Notes:
The SSC15F shuttle was designed to offer high performance and capacity while minimizing the cost of the craft (less than 3 MCr when purchased in volume). It is designed to carry an optional pilot (the craft can be operated under remote control) and up to 20 passengers, in addition to 58 displacement tones of cargo. The pilot is provided with an open crewstation. The passenger's seats are adequate. A fresher is provided for the passengers comfort during flight. No food service is provided due to the limited duration of most flights. The passenger compartment can be converted into a 5 ton cargo hold simply by removing the passenger's seats (the seats would have to be stored on the mother-ship or somewhere on the ground if they were to be put back into the compartment later).
The cargo area is divided into 3 holds, two of 24 tones and one of 10 tones. The cargo areas are able to be sealed to allow for use for fuel storage. The SC15F has large fuel scoops that allow the holds to be filled with a single 1 hour pass through a gas giant's atmosphere. This allows it to be used to refuel ships that are not streamlined at gas giants.
Contra-grav lifters are used on the SSC15F for propulsion rather than thrusters to reduce cost. The performance is considered good for customers simply looking for surface-to-orbit transportation. This shuttle would not be considered appropriate for customers planning to operate in deep space. This is not considered a major handicap as it is not intended for that use. With 2 G acceleration (over 500 kph) when fully loaded the SSC15F shuttle can operate effectively on high G worlds. When not carrying cargo, the SSC15F can accelerate at up to 10 G's, reaching speeds in excess of 1,800 kph. A fusion reactor provides the SSC15F with power for a full year between refueling.
The SSC15F can, optionally, be armed. There is over 37 MW of surplus power to operate a weapons turret. This is sufficient to operate a variety of weapons systems. Optionally, the empty turret socket could be converted into additional storage space (3 tones) as it is immediately adjacent to the small hold.
The SSC15F is a very common shuttle, it is especially popular among independent operators of large starships due to its competitive pricing and large capacity. Many starports use them to shuttle passengers and cargo to orbiting starships that are unable to land. Thousands of examples of this shuttle have been produced over the years. These shuttles are constructed at the Svenson's Small Craft LIC shipyards located on most hi-population TL-15 worlds.
