Design Notes:
The Varkaus class Subsidized Long Merchant is very effective for use in the Rift and other areas where a long jump capability is required. It has the capacity to carry 149 tons of cargo and 10 passengers.
The Varkaus class is designed for frontier operations. There are fuel scoops and a fuel purification plant (24 hours) for frontier refueling. She is armed with a triple laser turret and a missile turret with five missile canisters to discourage pirates. Defensively, she carries a sandcaster turret and automated triple VRF PD laser. The missile turret and the VRF PD laser are equipped with MFDs. An MFD can be added for the laser turret, at the customer’s request (and the additional cost of 10 MCr). The weapon systems use LIDAR to track targets. The VRF PD laser uses a flight computer to provide automated operations, eliminating the need for a gunner to operate it.
The contra-grav lifters are available for access to high gravity worlds, such as gas giants. This is necessary for fuel skimming. Otherwise, they are not used because the Varkaus only has 1-G gravity compensation and it would be uncomfortable for the passengers to be exposed to the extra G forces.
The passengers and crew share a lounge, gym and full galley with excellent food. The cargo hold is divided into nine 16-ton compartments and a single five-ton compartment. The 16-ton compartments are designed to hold standardized cargo containers. The five-ton compartment can be used to carry mail or for the personal property of the passengers. Three life boats are provided for the safety of the passengers and crew in the case where the ship must be evacuated.
The two gunner billets are normally not filled. The steward and medic normally also serve as the gunners. The gunner’s bunks are then available for passengers who are willing to travel at a reduced rate in steerage.
The captain has a large stateroom and an office. There is a hanger for a standard 2-ton air raft for the captain or crew’s use when planet-side. The air raft hanger can be used for additional storage (4 tons) if an air raft is not carried.
There are two Varkaus class vessels, the SDCS Stirling Bee and the SDCS Col. Arno Svenson, providing service between Ariis (Verge/Ariis 2439) and the Ariisite colony, called Stirling, located in the Gionnan system (Verge/Ariis 2434). The route passes through the Hauk system (Verge/Ariis 21/37). The service provides monthly shipments between the two worlds. These ships are owned by Svensons Development Corporation.
