Design Notes
The Hippocrates hospital ship is designed to treat or evacuate the injured from battle fields. It is also used to evacuate the sick and injured from worlds within the Third Imperium. These ships were originally built for the Imperial Navy. They have since been incorporated in most Colonial squadrons and, in fact, some have been donated to large disaster relief organizations, like the Solomani "Red Cross" and "Doctors Without Borders" organizations. With the capacity for doing jump 4 she can keep up with a typical IN task force and/or reach a disaster site quickly.

She carries 3 CAMEL class Medical Launches to bring the suffering to the ship. Many times a Livingston class Mobile Field Hospital will be carried in place of one of the CAMEL class craft, depending upon the ship's mission. They are useful when it is necessary to land in areas where no starports are available. One CAMEL class craft is stowed in a hanger where transferring patients to the ship is normally performed. The other CAMEL class craft are carried via docking rings.

The Hippocrates is basically shaped like a long box with 6 decks. Access to the CAMEL hanger and docking rings is from the 4th deck (taking space in the 5th deck as well). This gets the patients to the sick bays quickly. Each CAMEL has a pilot and a paramedic on staff. She has a nominal rating for 48 patients.

There are medical six wings, two each on the 3rd, 4th and 5th decks, each with a sick bay and 8 patients rooms. Each sick bay is staffed by a Doctor, 2 Nurses and an Orderly. They are designed such that each wing can be isolated from the rest of the ship, if necessary. Since each sick bay has two additional beds, the Hippocrates can actually handle 60 patients at one time. Significantly more beds than the official rating.

There is a surgical center and a complete bio lab on the 3rd deck with two lab technicians on staff. The patient's galley is also located on the 3rd deck. The bridge is located on the 6th (top) deck along with the officer's quarters, lounge, galley, and gym. The turrets are accessed from the 2nd deck where the crews quarters, galley, gym and lounge are located. The cargo hold is on the 1st (bottom) deck. It is usually loaded with medical drugs and equipment. A Neuro Activity Sensor is available to detect survivors, as well.

Extended life support is standard. Sufficient food is carried to operate without re-supply for 13 weeks. There is enough reactor fuel carried to operate at full power for a year. Batteries are provided to operate life support and other minimal systems for 10 hours should there be a reactor failure.

The Hippocrates is able to protect herself in combat situations with two Quad 25Mj VRF PD Laser Turrets, two Sandcaster Turrets and two Nuclear Damper Turrets. The two gunner's workstations are complete with a 200kkm LIDAR and a 30kkm MFD. While the lasers could be used offensively, these armaments are intended to be strictly defensive in nature. The hull is armored and even has Electro Static Armor for added protection, as well. There are four marines for internal security.

The Hippocrates has fuel scoops for gas giant refueling and 24 hour fuel purification machinery to allow refueling where no refined fuel is available.

In a situation where the Hippocrates has to be abandoned, the patients can be evacuated in the CAMEL launches and the remaining crew can be evacuated in lifeboats. Three lifeboats are accessible from the officers quarters, the rest from the crews quarters.
