Design Notes
The SSC15DSD deep space sensor drone is designed to provide an automated, long range deep space passive sensor screen. It is designed to place itself in the designated orbit and stay on station for periods of up to 34 years without maintenance. 98 % of the cost is tied up in the powerful passive sensor array. It is fully automated, so there is no crew requirement. A cramped crewstation is provided for a robot to pilot the craft and to provide maintenance as required.
It is designed to be difficult to detect, with features like stealth and advanced masking. When it is on station the maneuver drive can be shut down, except during times when it must re-position itself, allowing the power requirements to drop to 0.2 MW, this in turn allows the fusion reactor fuel to last for more than 34 years. Navigation aids are included to detect when the drone has drifted from it's intended station.
The SSC15DSD has a spare computer, fusion reactor and laser communicator. This allows the backups to kick in and report any malfunctions of the primary systems.
