Design Notes

The Retief class of medium fighters were developed by Svenson's Small Craft for Oberlindes Lines. The RFP posed major design constraints for the team. The RFP requirements included 15 ton maximum displacement, 5 G acceleration (which was lifted to provide for deep space operations), EMM advanced masking, ECM jamming, laser weapons able to do 3 points of damage, 1 ton of bombs/missiles, carriage by external grapple, and usage for ground support.

ECM is provided by military black coatings, a radio jammer, passive EMS jammer, and advanced EMM Masking.

The Retief is protected by 2 cm of bonded super dense armor. Further protection is provided through the use of electrostatic armor. The needle shaped air frame hull provides the maximum atmospheric maneuverability possible for the fighter.

The pilot operates the fixed VRF laser and two missile canisters (or bombs) himself. MFDs are included to automate and improve the weapons systems performance. The missile canisters are designed to use standard one-half displacement ton missiles. The missiles can, optionally, be replaced with two one-half ton bombs.

The pilot has an open crewstation. The ship's locker contains small arms and survival equipment for the pilot's protection in case of a crash landing.

Dual fiber-optic computers provide high automation reducing the crew requirements to a minimum. Sufficient reactor fuel is carried to operate the fusion reactors at full power for over 36 days without refueling.
