Design Notes
The 600-ton Type M Subsidized Liner is primarily a passenger vessel, though the large (130 tons) cargo capacity is also useful and important. The Lord Somerset class is a particularly popular version of this type of ship which features lush accommodations for the passengers. It is normally an unstreamlined, orbit-to-orbit ship. However, this model is streamlined.
The forward, saucer-shaped portion of the hull contains the ship's lounge which includes dining and bar facilities. Collapsible walls allow the area to be opened up or divided into separate areas for use as a casino, dance floor, or private parties. The passenger staterooms are designed with collapsible walls to allow combining rooms as needed. This allows flexibility in selection of passengers as she can carry anywhere from 20 high passengers (with all of the staterooms set up as large staterooms) to 40 middle passengers (with the staterooms divided into 40 small staterooms) or any combination of passengers in between.
The liner's jump and power plant mechanisms fill three decks which rise in a superstructure aft. All three decks are identical, connected by access hatches. Fuel is similarly carried in sections below the lower cargo deck.
Bridge and engineering crew are quartered in the central hub, while stewards (and gunners, if any) are quartered in the passenger area. Turrets, if installed, are mounted directly above the bridge (a ladder would be installed between the computer and avionics sections), below the saucer (accessible from the bar/galley area) and aft, below the lower cargo deck. Many configurations of turrets are possible. This version has two laser turrets and a sandcaster turret.
The Lord Somerset class subsidized liner is very common in the Spinward Marches, servicing many worlds that are unable to support regular service by the Mega Corporations. The long jump ability allows it to serve worlds that are off the beaten track and could not be served by the many Free Traders and Far Traders that operate in the region.
Many versions have been built over the years to accommodate the various needs of the owners. Some have a minimal number of staterooms to allow handling more cargo while others have less cargo capacity to allow carrying of additional passengers. There are several that have been built with full casinos while others have even been outfitted as privateers. The RRLS Tristam is an example of a modified Lord Somerset.
The cargo area is divided into seven 16 ton bays; each with a large hatch and a 16 ton automated cargo handler to make loading and unloading fast and efficient. The 16 ton bays are designed to accommodate standard 1, 2 and 4 tons cargo containers. A smaller hold with 13 tons of storage is available for the property of the various passengers and a 5 ton hold is provided for mail storage.
For worlds where there are limited starport facilities, the Lord Somerset is equipped with fuel scoops and a fuel purification plant that can convert a full load of fuel in 28 hours. She is streamlined to allow skimming of gas giants, as well. The backup Contra-Grav Lifter when used in conjunction with the regular Contra-Grav Lifter allows the Lord Somerset to land on worlds with high gravity.
The Lord Somerset carries a 10-ton ship's boat for emergency life boat for the crew, shuttle services and to land on worlds with too great a gravity well for her to land on or to land at remote locations on the planet. Five life boats are provided for the passengers.
