Design Notes
The Harper Orbital Station was built in the Vienna system, by Karelia Industries of Ariis (Ariis/Verge 24/39), to provide a refueling station for rift liners travelling between Ariis and Joslins (Taiwan/Verge 30/30). It is named for the first Solomani settler of the Vienna system, Edward Harper. It is orbiting a small gas giant, called Zeta.
The Harper Orbital Station is designed to allow rift liners to dock, refuel and continue their journey quickly. Two hangers are provided for this service. There are limited repair facilities with mechanical and electrical shops that allow the spacious hanger to be used for repairs, if necessary. In addition, there are four 1000std docking rings for rift liners and rift freighters that do not require immediate turnaround. There are five docking umbilicals to service additional ships if all of the hangers and docking rings are in use. There are two 100std ship’s boats to provide shuttle services to Vienna, which is in an asteroid belt also orbiting Zeta. There are 14 extra crew to expedite the tasks necessary to refuel the rift liners as they pass through the station.
The Harper Orbital Station has two guest areas, one area for the high-passengers and one area for the mid-passengers. Each area has an 80std lounge, restaurant, casino and with two gyms. The high-passengers restaurant features a full galley. High-passenger cabins feature private safes. In addition, there is a 16std lounge for the crew, with an attached galley and gym. Attached to the lounges are the ship’s gardens, which provide natural food and help with the automated air recycling.
The Harper Orbital Station has a large fuel storage farm with a capacity of 6,500std. There are five fuel skimmers for replenishing the fuel tanks. The fuel skimmers do their own fuel purification while they are travelling between Zeta and the Harper Station. There are two crews for each skimmer, so that they can keep operating 7x24, if necessary. The warehouse can hold 480std of freight and is equipped with automated cargo handling equipment.
There is a spacious hanger with attached mechanical and electrical shops for maintenance of the fuel skimmers and shuttles.
The Harper Orbital Station is not defenseless; it has two nuclear damper turrets, five sandcasters, five automated VRF point defense lasers and electro-static armor. The flight computers control the VRF PD lasers. There are five laser turrets and three missile turrets (each is able to fire a five missile salvo) to drive off small corsairs. There is a small guard detachment and a jail, as well.
Contra-grav lifters are provided to keep the station in its proper place in orbit.
Sixty-four lifeboats are provided to safely evacuate all passengers and crew in an emergency.
