Lough Hyne. The seawater lake on which Ballyoughtra is situated in West Cork. Fishing in this lake is probably what kept our ancestors alive during The Great Famine in the 1840s.

More pictures of Lough Hyne from a real estate ad on the web. The house is "Lough Hyne Cottage" and may have been the local "Big House" owned by the Beechers in the 1800s. The Burkes are said to have been caretakers of the local big house in the 1900s.

Map of Ballyoughtera Townland Ballyoughtera is located on the northeast side of Lough Hyne. It is situated in the Civil Parish of Creagh, in the Poor Law Union of Skilbbereen, in West Cork, in the Barony of Carbery, in County Cork, Ireland. It is here that the Burke family has lived for at least 10 generations, probably since the 1600s.

NOTE: More recent photos of the decendants of Randall and Mary Burke can be seen at the website maintained by their great-granddaughter Margie Troy Baxter and her husband Mark Baxter. The Baxters now live in Japan.
