Useless Information
The first computing device was probably used by pre-historic man possibly to "compute" distance or shares of food.
The first "modern day" computer was developed in the late 1940's to early 1950's and took several rooms to house and a lot of air conditioning.
In the early days computers were called "Mainframe Computers". Today the larger ones are still called "Mainframes" and have several operator terminals or PC's connected to them for input and retrieval of information.
The first PC offered to the public was in the early 1980's and surprisingly enough was named "The Personal Computer" . (where do you suppose the name PC came from?)
The base "Program" used to make a PC work is called the "Operating System".
Contrary to what Al Gore says the INTERNET was developed in the late 1940's and was called ARPANET. (Al Gore DID NOT "Invent" the INTERNET in the 1990's)
ARPANET was use by the government and universities to "tie" their computers together for the sharing of information.
The INTERNET is not one physical thing or place. It is the name given to ALL of the computers, communication equipment, transmission media and other things used to connect those devices together.
When you connect your computer to the INTERNET your computer becomes part of the INTERNET.
The protocol ("language" used by the computers) of the INTERNET is called the TCP/IP Suite (Terminal Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol). It is a combination of a couple of protocols and was developed in the 1940's.
To the best of my knowledge the largest and fastest computer in the World is owned by the United States Government and is manufactured by CRAY. It DOES NOT use Microsoft Windows as an Operating System.
Also to the best of my knowledge the first Operating System developed specifically for networking PC's together was developed by NOVELL in the early 1980's. Microsoft did not develop a N.O.S (Network Operating System) until the mid 1990's.
