As the Commander of the Disabled American Veterans, (the first in a wheelchair) of Chapter 93, CPL Louis C. Goi, (USMC), Seminole, Fl. It was my Honor and duty to make the presentation on behalf of our chapter. Our namesake, CPL. Louis C. Goi. was killed in action during Vietnam Conflict. I placed the wreath beneath his name as the chapter commander. The Moving Wall, contained the names of those who gave their lives in the pursuit of freedom while in the Republic of Vietnam. |
The emotions I felt that day were overwhelming as I saluted them all. There were 58,000 + names on the wall that day in July 1988. As I stood there I heard their cries of ( Forget Us Not & Carry On and Protect Our Freedom). I swore then and there that I would. One year later I was able to report; (Your Cries are being Fulfilled).
| In my home I have dedicated the walls of my study as a Memorial to the Fallen Brothers of IWO JIMA also to the Flag Raising there on Mt. Suribachi. The raising of Flags occurred on Feb. 23,1945. There were two actual flag raisings, one in the early morning and one again in the mid-morning. As one descended the other was raised. Former (USMC CPL.) Charles Lindberg is the final survivor of those flag raising's. He has provided me with photos, letters and even sand from the beach where he landed on IWO JIMA. Letters and photos were donated to the Marine Archives on Aug.4,1994. The packet of sand and personal note from Lindberg were sent later on in 1995. |
Official 1st flag raising on Mt. Suribichi, Iwo Jima, and USMC History. "Thanks" Charles Lindberg (pictured above). |
