Meadowcrest Trail Club
A new group has formed for those who regularly enjoy walking and running along Meadowcrest’s beautiful trails and roadways. For Community members who may not know, there is also an offroad trail perfect for hiking or biking in the new Park at MacVicar. The Meadowcrest Trail Club will provide opportunities to team up with others who also take pleasure in these rewarding outdoor activities.

Sports Day surely brings out the best in Meadowcrest, and there must be quite a few active individuals willing to coach and inspire others on to participation in local athletic events throughout the year. It would be especially interesting to learn if a member of the Community has successfully completed all or part of the fitness stations along the trails in Meadowcrest Park – or at least made a New Year’s resolution to give it a try in 2004!

Running Commentary
This column highlights the athletic endeavors, past and present, of our family and friends in the Community. Members are actively encouraged to share their interests and achievements.

Chuck Ard took second place overall in the Space Coast Marathon held 30 November 2003, in Cocoa, Florida. The 45-year-old nuclear controls technician covered the 26.2 mile course in 3 hours 8 minutes and 43 seconds. This was Chuck’s sixth marathon in the past two years having run Charlotte, Myrtle Beach, and Boston in 2002; Tampa, Ellerbe Springs, (N.C.) and Space Coast in 2003. He had competed in several marathons earlier in his running career, including the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C., the Mississippi Marathon, and the Chicago Marathon.

After a ten-year layoff, Chuck returned to the marathon scene as the Ard children began to join his wife, Penne, in mastering the shorter distance runs. The entire family could often be seen running together through Meadowcrest this past year as daughter Nicole (Nike) prepared to step up to the 13.1 mile distance in the Disney Half-Marathon on January 11th. Nike currently serves as secretary of the Citrus Road Runners. Her dad supported her through this exciting race around the World, and she plans to return the favor at the Kona Marathon in Hawaii this June while enjoying a celebratory senior trip of her own. Nike is also considering plans for a full-length marathon in 2005.

Meadowcrest, Meadowcrest
Every morning you greet me;
Ray of light, clean & bright
You look happy to meet me.

Myrtles and Oaks, may you bloom & grow,
Bloom & grow forever...

MOTION ON
PETITION FOR ACB STORAGE SHED REVIEW
REMAINS "TABLED"

In the meantime, the muhly grass is slowly growing back in the palm islands at MacVicar Park, hopefully for good, but the nature trail continues to be severely damaged by trucks and trailers running to and from the frequently-accessed maintenance storage shed. It was also found that a big part of the problem was the regular maintenance crew driving up to take breaks in the upper end of the Park, out of sight of the residents along MacVicar. The Hillcrest Board suggested that they should be parking their vehicles in the paved parking area near the lower tennis courts in Meadowcrest Park instead. The comment has been made that the location near the water plant is aesthetically unpleasing, yet this is one reason a park was planned to enhance the surrounding residential area. Many members were concerned that the "temporary" shed would be the beginning of the end of this uniquely landscaped trail and park, if not our Community architectural standards, as the need to acquire a new dumpster was being considered at the same time of the shed's purchase. Anyone who has visited the Park at MacVicar has viewed the awesome geometrical landscape design 'specially placed to complement the tower in the background. The tacky metal shed and invasive plantings -- which will eventually overtake all else without a landscape maintenance contract -- all were stuck in amongst the trees after the fact and throw the whole concept completely off kilter (see new photos below.)

More Points of View on the Portable Metal Storage Building in MacVicar Park

Multi-use Maintenance Storage Building

Click on graphics above to view larger images.

"We would never allow anything like this in Arbor Court, and would fight tooth and nail to keep it out of the Commercial area. The residents of Fairmont pay additional fees* to keep this kind of thing out of their backyards [i.e., main park.]" -- Past President, MCA Board of Directors

*"All Parkside property (upper, lower, and otherwise) was purchased at a premium, but the only 'additional fees' that the residents of Fairmont pay are the ones for exterior maintenance and lawn upkeep of their own private property. Hillcrest residents pay at least the equivalent in individual maintenance of their homes. Each village contributes the same amount to the Master Association for maintenance of the common and limited common areas, including each Park bordering the residential areas, and all deserve the same respect and consideration."

"I went to the website on the temporary structure installed in Meadowcrest. (YUCK!!!!!). Having said that I am really surprised to see a structure (temporary building) in Meadowcrest. Let's keep moving forward towards a more permanent structure at the pool cabana."

"Of course we are willing to support a petition to remove the metal shed from our Community, and we will see if other long-time members will add their names, too. ... [Other communities] have come up with ways to deal with these same needs, and there are some good examples to be found there."

"If homeowners are not allowed temporary structures on their property according to our deed restrictions, why should any temporary structures be allowed? This structure is an eyesore. It should be removed immediately. Yes, we'll volunteer for the Committee."

"I believe that the other Villages would certainly object if it were in their 'backyard' and hope that everyone will see MacVicar Park as 'Meadowcrest's backyard', deserving of the same quality construction, security and protection as the rest of our community. Nothing, in my opinion, should be in MacVicar Park that would be unacceptable in the Villages or the main park."

"While I fully recognize the need for a storage building and believe that money can, in the long run, be saved by having our own, I question the metal building. It is truly my personal belief that the developer of Meadowcrest would never have constructed such a building nor allowed another to do so. I neither know the politics of the situation at hand nor care to know. But I am against metal buildings and especially a metal building constructed on property in which I have a common interest."

"The petition is very well done -- the points are clearly stated and best of all, there is a proposed solution to the problem included [for the Board's consideration.]"

"The entire membership should have input on a major decision and purchase such as this one. ... If the lot owners had an individual right to vote in the Community Association, this kind of thing would never have passed."

"Makes us wonder if anyone really understands how much time and money many of us have invested in order to keep clear of unrestricted trailer trash! We would never be allowed to have a storage shed behind our home, nor would we ever request one, yet a metal monstrosity has been placed in our 'BACKYARD' without our knowledge or consent."

"Everyone will want a storage shed of their own now ... and the DAB will gladly deny each and every application."

"Temporary structures are not allowed in Meadowcrest. It will have to go."

"Surprised I was not advised of this earlier."

"I thought we weren't allowed storage sheds. We can't do anything without permission so how was this done? Maybe we should all put up storage sheds, park in our driveways overnight, plant anything we want, etc. Why not make good usage of this area for the residents such as a place to store motor homes and boats."

"WHAT KIND OF LEADERSHIP WOULD APPROVE THIS EYESORE. I DID NOT MOVE INTO MEADOWCREST TO HAVE A TRAILER PARK ANNEX INSTALLED TO LOWER MY PROPERTY VALUES."

"Olsen Family Partnership V, Ltd. objects to our property being used to access the park and the shed."

"I agree with everyone, remove the shed and place [the storage facility] where it is needed near the clubhouse."

"It is not a good addition to our community."

"The metal shed looks very similar to the manufactured home (trailer) that we 'happily' sold nine years ago to get out of a trailer park situation. We moved to Meadowcrest to invest in and enjoy a 'conforming' real home. If the MCA BOD is trying to make us look at 'tin cans' they aren't succeeding. Surely they jest; or is this a bad dream or is this a test to 'wake up' ALL of us property owners in ALL the villages. We should ALL stand up and be counted to protect our property values and investment. The 'NON CONFORMING' shed has got to go."

"Would ANY Meadowcrest resident be happy with the shed near their home? I think not! The method used to pass this issue is OUTRAGEOUS --Not the Meadowcrest way of doing things! Letting this go by would open the door to MORE similar actions. TOOLS HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING LOCATED NEAR RESIDENCES!!!!!"

"If we are to remain a quality community everyone needs to adhere to our community Architectural Controls. We support this goal."

"If our concerns are ignored it's because the MB feels as if the residents' concerns don't count...."

"THE BUILDING AND THE PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR IT SHOULD BE REMOVED!!"

"Our first concern should be for the residential area. With this community approaching twenty years old, it is essential we upkeep and upgrade, if necessary, to maintain our standards or we all lose in the longrun. Lose our quality of life and lose value in our homes. We should take people on a tour [of other area neighborhoods and communities] and see what has happened to them."

"The question of what kinds of materials are/will be stored in the shed remains unanswered. According to those in the know -- the new pressure washer and trailer alone take up the majority of space in the shed, although we were told that it would mainly house seasonal decorations. Those items have remained in their places in the guardhouses. Concerns over toxic materials and other hazardous equipment being stored and utilized near residences with young children present have also been raised, and with good reason. In fact, someone has already observed that a pile of maintenance-related debris has lain on the ground beside the metal shed for weeks since its hasty installation."

"As a resident of Hillcrest Village, I wish to voice my opinion regarding the installation of a 'metal' storage shed in a limited green belt area located in Mac Vicar Park. Storage facilities are not permitted in Meadowcrest Village and the placement is in a non accessibility area. This would lead to deterioration of the park and grassy areas.

In the future, all decisions made by every Village should be reviewed, discussed and presented to all property owners."

"If the equipment and/or tools, which are to be housed in the shed, are also used to maintain the BUSINESS AREAS (Vantage Point, Corporate Oaks, Meadowcrest Blvd, etc ... and I do not know that they are) then shouldn't the DEVELOPER shoulder some of this burden, perhaps by permitting Meadowcrest to use a site somewhere on his property HIDDEN FROM VIEW of the residents?"

"We've always felt the residents should have the RIGHT to vote on extraordinarily large expenses above, let's say, $3,000 (or whatever the community agrees to) and not leave it to the board where a member's possible self-interest may influence his or her decision.

As long as we're out to fix things, let's do the job right!"

"As a former Board member, I am appalled and ashamed of the attitude of this board. I always tried to be aware of my village's needs and concerns and always reported back the progress and results of a board meeting. While I realize that decisions must be made during a board meeting, it is their responsibility to meet the needs of their village and not their own personal agenda. I thought we were living in a democracy!!!!"

"If active participation is prohibited and individual responsibility for our common interests is removed (voluntarily or otherwise) -- pride of ownership inevitably goes with it. We cannot afford to lose this vital part of Community life if Meadowcrest is to maintain its high standards. For the Board to take this inherent right away from the property owners would turn us all into a bunch of [indifferent and uninvolved] renters, as one member recently noted."

"As speechless as many of us felt when catching our first glimpse of the metal monstrosity in MacVicar Park, it is incredible to learn that the same violation of our trust could be duplicated – yet the latest 'President’s Message' [in the Community's bi-monthly newsletter] which knowingly repeats false allegations through a one-way medium is the proverbial straw!”

"[It was stated] that the storage unit will not impact the majority of the residents. Well, the same can be said about lawn ornaments: if a home has a fancy lawn ornament on it, or the house is painted bright red, that won't affect the majority of the residents, either, but only the people on that particular street, yet the DAB would go ballistic over it, and changes would have to be made pronto! "

"I am in awe of [the] research [found in the REBUTTALS to the Association President's Message (News & Views, Oct-Nov '03)] and I support all of your efforts and the removal of the temporary structure installed in the "MacVicar Park". If Jessie MacVicar was living today she would not approve of a temporary structure in a park named after her. After all the name MacVicar is from the Olsen family where they claim to be the original developers of Meadowcrest. Why would they want a temporary structure named after her? Him? Is this the way the Olsen family wants to be remembered? Temporary developers?"
